Wood Wall and Ceiling Cleaning Instructions

Follow these wood ceiling maintenance steps and your wooden boards will always look great!

  1. Dust: Dust with a soft cloth or dusting tool. When ceiling cleaning, we recommend using an extension tool for ease. Regularly dusting your ceilings and walls should keep them properly cared for and clean. However, if dust has sat too long or residue is showing and dusting alone is not getting the job done — that is when you will want to wash the boards.
  2. Wash: Wall washing can be done simply. Mix 1 tsp mild dish detergent with 1-gallon of warm water. Have a separate gallon of clean warm water without detergent for rinsing. Saturate a rag or sponge with the cleaning solution and wring out excess water. Make sure the rag/sponge is not too heavily saturated. Wipe down the wood in small sections with the cleaning solution. Rinse the cleaning solution off with clean warm water.
  3. Dry: Once you’ve finished ceiling or wall washing, be sure to dry each section with a clean dry towel or cloth. Make sure that it is completely dry to maintain health and prevent staining. Do not let the detergent or water sit or air-dry on the wood.
  4. Repeat: Continue until the entire surface has been cleaned and dried. Repeat these wood ceiling maintenance steps as needed when your walls or ceiling seem dirty.

Ceiling and Wall Washing Tips

Knowing how to clean wood paneling is an important step in keeping your walls and ceiling in excellent condition. Here are a few bonus tips that will keep your boards looking great for years to come:

  • Use Water-Based Polyurethane: To maintain the new, polished look of your boards, apply 1 additional coat of quality water-based polyurethane at desired sheen as needed.
  • Do Not Power Wash: If your wood wall or ceiling is outside, it may be tempting to power wash it. However, this can damage the wood, leaving it worse off than before
  • Wait to Clean Floors: Don’t clean your floors until you are finished with the walls and ceiling cleaning. Sweep floors afterwards to easily eliminate dust.
